Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy
Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT) utilizes ongoing hormone replacement to give you a smoother transition through Perimenopause and into your menopausal years to keep you feeling balanced and amazing. Bioidentical hormones are defined as substances that have exactly the same chemical and molecular structure as hormones produced in the human body.
What is Perimenopause / Menopause? According to The Centre for Menstrual Cycle and Ovulation Research, menopause is a time in a woman’s life with no period for 12 months. The average age of menopause is 51. The stage prior to menopause is called perimenopause. During perimenopause, women have changes in their monthly menstrual cycle, mood, hot flashes, brain fog and more. Perimenopause can start between the mid-30s and the late 40s. The average age at which irregular cycles develop is approximately age 47. Perimenopause begins in women with regular cycles whose ovaries then begin producing less hormones, often causing your menstrual cycle to become erratic or irregular. During perimenopause, women typically are making higher amounts of estrogen compared to significant low levels of progesterone. The low levels of progesterone compared to substantially high estrogen makes perimenopause the most difficult time for all women. In contrast to Menopause, both estrogen and progesterone levels normally become low and remain low throughout the remainder of life. Hot flashes can occur in both perimenopause and menopause. Perimenopause can last about 7 years and in some cases up to 14 years. During this time, higher estrogen causes weight gain through insulin resistance and by increased body fat. Higher insulin levels cause increased appetite and weight gain. Perimenopause also causes weight gain as progesterone levels are too low. Progesterone, responsible for raising the basal temperature during the second half of the ovulatory menstrual cycle, makes us burn about 300 extra calories a day. Without progesterone, we don't burn these extra calories and instead store the extra energy.
Am I experiencing Perimenopause / Menopause? • Change in menstrual cycle in perimenopause: no longer regular periods, periods may be short, heavier, or lighter than usual. • Hot flashes: face, neck, or arms may become flushed, sweating and shivering may occur. • Incontinence: decrease in control of bladder. Urine may leak with sudden urge or during exercise, sneezing, or laughing. • Bladder infections: recurrent urinary tract infections due to lack of estrogen • Interruption in sleep: difficulty falling asleep, waking up too early, difficulty falling back to sleep, night sweats or hot flashes may wake you up. • Vaginal dryness: can cause discomfort, some complain of pain during sex. • Sexual drive: some complain of lack of desire to have sex. • Mood changes: some women feel more irritable, anxious, or depressed. • Body changes: loss of muscle, thinner skin, more fat is found around your waist, joints and muscles become more stiff and ache. • Cognitive Impairment: brain fog, hormonal cessation by menopausal change is one of the causes in cognitive decline • Migraines • Palpitations

Am I experiencing Estrogen Dominance? During perimenopause, progesterone declines first often leaving estrogen to be a much higher ratio than progesterone. This could create estrogen dominance. Symptoms of estrogen dominance can be mild to severe. Unfortunately, many women are given the options of surgery (often a hysterectomy), birth control pills, or synthetic hormones. Bioidentical progesterone could alleviate symptoms of estrogen dominance. • Severe menstrual cramps • Heavy periods with clotting • Irregular menstrual cycles • Uterine fibroids • Ovarian cysts • Endometriosis • Infertility • Multiple miscarriages • Fibrocystic breast disease • Premenstrual breast tenderness • Premenstrual fluid retention and weight gain • Anxiety, panic attacks, or depression • Premenstrual mood swings • Premenstrual headaches • Migraines • Decreased libido
